Wesley Christiansen, State School Board District 15

Why did you decide to run for public office?

I was actually talked into it by a group of friends and associates.

What is your background? Profession, skills, etc.?

I was a High school teacher (History) and coach (football, wrestling, and track) for 31 years. I served in the military for 28 years, most with the 2/222 FA, retiring from the 419th FW at Hill AFB. I served on the Wash. Co. school board for 12 years, also serving as president for the board. In addition, I served on the USBA executive board, the USBA board of directors, the board of directors for the DXCATC, the board of trustees for the UHSAA, and the board of directors for the SUP.

What is your general experience with drug policy and substance abuse?

With friends, family, and associates.

Do you support the creation of a medical cannabis program? Can you expand upon your general feelings about medical cannabis?

I have not been convinced of the need for it.

What steps would you take to reduce the number of overdose deaths? Do you have any personal experiences with overdose?

I think everyone has an experience with drug overdose. Education would be the first step. Next, is to help people by not criminalizing, and more access to mental health programs.

Do you agree with this analysis? Please feel free to elaborate.

I agree as far as helping people get off the drugs, but not legalizing them.

Are you familiar with the principle of harm reduction? Do you have any experience with harm reduction policies? Please feel free to elaborate.

I agree.

What are your general thoughts on the decriminalization of cannabis? Please elaborate.

I would never make it legal.

Are you interested in sponsoring drug policy reform legislation if you were elected? What would be some specific areas of focus or interest for you?

Get people help which has to include jobs and mandatory mental health.

Anything else?
